No Medium Was Needed for These Paranormal Mirror Writing Messages

Photos of the mirror writing include cryptic symbols (4-18-89).

The following are some of the messages found mysteriously written in soap on the bathroom mirror and shown in photographs documenting the Moffitt family 'poltergeist' case that occurred in Southern California 1987-1992 as chronicled in Unwelcomed (2015) by Deborah Moffitt.  Ellipses indicate unreadable portions as lightbulb glare prevents some words from being legible.  The photos were taken under expedient circumstances and more than two decades would pass before Deborah decided to publish a book about her family's haunting.

Among many mysterious and bizarre paranormal phenomena experienced by her family, Deborah described the mirror writing messages as "one of the most amazing, confusing and unique phenomena I have ever experienced."

The mirror writing aspect of the case correlates with 'talking poltergeist' cases such as those that occurred in Centrahoma, Oklahoma (as mentioned previously) and the Enfield, England case (1, 2) that was chronicled in This House is Haunted: An Investigation of the Enfield Poltergeist (1980) by Guy Lyon Playfair.  The following passages are two excerpts from the book.

Then there was the writing that regularly appeared on the bathroom walls and mirror.  This was usually some inspiring message like "I AM FRED" or just "SHIT," but one day a most unusual word appeared, which was written in soap on the bathroom mirror.  It was clearly spelt Q, U, L, I, T.

And what was Brenda Burcombe supposed to think the day her pork pie disappeared?  She had bought one for her lunch and taken it home, leaving it on the kitchen table.  Soon afterwards, it just disappeared, and Brenda never found it, although she even went back to see if she had left it in the shop.  Later that day, a message appeared scrawled on the Harpers' bathroom mirror:

"I'VE GOT YOUR PORK PIE."  Rose, who knew nothing about Brenda's missing lunch, rubbed the mirror clean when she got home from school, but after she had finished her tea, she went into the bathroom to find exactly the same message on the mirror.

Concerning the Moffitt Family case, the mirror writing messages as preserved in extant photographs are only a small portion of the discussions that occurred.  Deborah explained in the book:

One thing that struck me is that it never wrote in front of us.  It waited until we left the room.  Given even a few seconds a new message would be there when we opened the door.  At first it didn't respond to our questions.  It seemed like it had an agenda.

Running commentary on our lives and conversations became the main topic of his ['Mr. Entity'] communications.

Some days the writing on the mirror was nonstop.  I had to constantly go into the bathroom and wipe the mirrors so he ['Mr. Entity'] had a place to write.

It was estimated that there were taken around 1,000 photographs of the messages on mirror and walls along with the other occurrences.  Photos were "destroyed on the advice by supposed experts in the field of the paranormal."  Deborah was surprised upon finding the preserved collection of photos after the passing of her husband.

Consistent readers of this blog may recall my mentioning the parallel between this case and what has been reported about the 19th Century 'Bell Witch' talking poltergeist case.  Richard Williams Bell wrote in memoirs that the 'witch' (unseen speaking entity) had a high regard for his mother while manifesting a dislike for his father.  The mother-in-law Lee was also a focus of taunting as chronicled in the Moffitt case.  The gamut of mysterious events recorded about the Bell Witch case are chronicled to have occurred between 1817 and 1821 (see previous article).
One of the symbolic manifestations incorporated a photograph of Deborah Moffitt's mother-in-law.  Lee was a devoted Catholic although she hadn't belonged to a church for many years  (11-1-88)

The outrageous aspects of some of the mirror writing messages and the fact that no family member was seriously injured during the haunting remind me of the "I will manifest all your fears" philosophizing of 'Ramtha the Enlightened One' (channeled through JZ Knight) that also includes intermittent 'verbiage contradictions.'  An extensive list of books and recordings document this complex case of transcendental communication.  Titles of some of the published Ramtha discourse transcripts include When Fairy Tales Do Come True (2003), Parallel Lifetimes: Fluctuations in the Quantum Field (2003, revised edition 2007) and The New March: Developing a Mind Worth Preserving (2007).

Parallel Lifetimes includes commentary relating to metaphysical conditions and symbolism to elucidate how "knowledge is the key to the kingdom of heaven":

In the quantum world our signature is often controlled by an anomaly and phenomenon called the soul, and the soul is the ultimate recordkeeper.  Contemplation is the key to expansion, even in quantum flux.

Think of the soul as a large book with pages made out of light.  On these pages is a secret tongue, and the tongue on those pages is symbols.  If we wanted to break the code, maybe we could start perceiving these symbols as quantum fluctuations.

It looks like hieroglyphs but it isn't.  It isn't the fire words of the Cabala but it is similar because each letter is saying something.  The only way we break the code is when we understand that the formations of these letters are formations of quantum potentials.

Considering this extensively documented case of channeling, Ramtha was quoted in Voyage to the New World (1985):

You are going to learn to the brink of death, Entity, what life is and how precious it is.  Then you will never fear anything ever again.  And I will make you a light unto the world.

All like you will bring forth great fruit that will bring forth an age called the Age of Spirit, [the] Age of Light, on this plane.

. . . God created no devil.  Only man did that as he measured to enslave; to inflict torment and fear on creeds of people to enslave them.

They are taught to fear God, not to love Him.

. . . fear sells, terror sells.  If someone prophesied that the world would go on and gracefully bloom itself into another time period and would continue to get better and better, no one would purchase such words in the marketplace.

Do not squander away your moments from happiness and the goodness of your prosperous life to live in terror of something that is wholly conjecturous.

Interview Recordings - The Moffitt Family Poltergeist Case

Deborah Moffitt has been a guest on a variety of paranormal-themed radio shows and Internet podcasts to speak about the bizarre haunting experienced by her family during the late 1980s and early '90s in Southern California.  The incidents described are usually categorized as that of 'poltergeist phenomena,' including messages written with soap on a bathroom mirror of the family's house.  Deborah's case study Unwelcomed was published in 2015 and a fictionalized version of the case, A Deadly Haunting (2014), was written by Joie Albrecht.  A website for the earlier book presents a page of links to video interviews.  The Moffitt Family 'poltergeist' case is the topic of the five preceding articles at this blog.

Upon listening to some of Deborah's interviews, some of the moderators engaged in conversation where superstitious assumptions were casually reiterated and accepted.  Some ambiguous expressions that can be heard are "portal"/"portals" (usually leaving unconsidered what aspect of 'nature' is involved with such a 'portal') and "spiritual attachment."  These terms convey suppositions that overlook spiritual concepts of an omniscient God and each individual human being having a 'guardian angel.'

Often when people talk or write about 'demons' (or 'djinns' for that matter) in a general and credulous manner, I find myself wishing that specific incidents or precise sources of information would be cited so that the basis for the perceptions might be understood.  The articles at this blog always identify sources of information, sometimes showing how parallels can be found between various documented cases of 'paranormal' phenomena.  Some examples of these articles are "The Bells and Witchcraft Legends", "Metaphorical Correlations Among 'Paranormal' Cases" and "Flying Saucers and 'The Nine Pattern'".

One audio recording featured at the A Deadly Haunting Videos web page is a national 2014 "Coast to Coast AM" interview of Deborah and Joie by guest host Dave Schrader.  One statement by Deborah articulated an attempt to find some explanation for the commencement of numerous mysterious incidents experienced by the family.  She mentioned about her husband's ill grandmother: "We believe that the lady [from Guatemala] that was taking care of her performed some type of ritual — we think was Santeria from what was found in the home when she left — and tried to keep her alive."  Other experiencers of poltergeist and 'talking poltergeist' phenomena have also tried to identify some basis for the commencement of mysterious occurrences that may seem unprecedented to anyone without knowledge of other cases.

A symbol that manifestednot only on the mirror but also at times written upon or gouged into walls and even carved into the carpeting—was described by Deborah as "a triangle with like a kite tail in the middle at the bottom."  The interview resulted with a photograph being posted at the radio show website —
This photograph was captioned "Symbol of Mr. Entity" with the information shared:
"Coast listener Leo from Columbus, Ohio, shares this photo of his 'triangle with a tail' tattoo—similar in appearance to the symbol associated with Mr. Entity described during tonight's show.  According to Leo, this is an alchemy logo which means 'changing lead into gold.'"

Among the links at the A Deadly Haunting Videos webpage is one for a "30 Odd Minutes" video interview.  This 2014 presentation involves interviewers Jeff Belanger and Andrew Lake costumed in uniforms while seen sitting inside a depiction of a flying saucer interior for "Mission 159" featuring Deborah (via telephone) and Joie.  During the interview, there were technical difficulties with Joie's audio communication.  Deborah stated during the interview about the haunting entity:

If we went on vacation, if we went on  — say we went out to dinner.  When we got home from dinner, on the table would be the waitress's nametag [from] where we had eaten.

So he always gave us a sign that — you know, you can leave the house but I'm always with you.

Yeah, there were quiet periods.  Especially around Christmas time.  For some reason, around the Christmas holidays everything would stop and everything would be nice and quiet for a few weeks.

. . . the only reason its [the story] coming out now is because my husband passed away.  He was the last one that was frightened of this.

For 25 years I couldn't talk about him [the entity].

One of the photos presented during the interview shows water dripping from a light fixture.  Deborah explained that this was one of several incidents that occurred days after the anomalous flood that briefly turned their interior staircase into a waterfall: "A few days later he [entity] had water coming out of all our light fixtures.  It was just — there was no source.  We had no leaks.  The water was just coming out of the light fixtures, dripping down."  Similar incidents involving anomalous water manifestations are related by the family of the Rochdale Poltergeist case (1, 2) among other testimonials of 'unexplained phenomena.'

There is also a 2014 interview of Deborah Moffitt by Rob McConnell in Canada for "The 'X' Zone Radio Show."  Rob's introductory statements include a comment that the book will "change the way we see evil."  Deborah told Rob about some of the complexities of the haunting —

My father-in-law actually wanted the entity to kill my mother-in-law.  That was part of the problem.

We saw my father-in-law doing strange things.  He would go into the bathroom and talk to the entity and then he would erase the mirror.  And then when he left I would ask the entity, "Well what was he doing in here?"  And he would tell me.  He said, "He wants me to kill Lee."

One of the messages seen in a book photograph reads "do your own dirty work."

Among other interviews that may be found from a Google search, Deborah was interviewed by Bran and Dave for the "Stary Time Podcast" of November 13, 2015.  At one point, Deborah was asked to explain about Lee belonging to the entity.

He wrote the whole story.  He wrote it.  He would write [on] the whole mirror.  I would read it.  I would erase it.  I would leave.  I'd come back.  This went on for like a half hour because he told me the whole story.  It went — I can't remember it word for word but the gist of the story was that my mother-in-law had been promised to him in a past life as a blood sacrifice.  It was in a monastery in I think it was France he said way back like in the 15 or 1600s.  And there were monks in the monastery that practiced Satanism.  They gave — my mother-in-law was going to be the blood sacrifice.  Somehow something happened and the blood sacrifice didn't come to fruition.  And she got away or something.  But he said it didn't matter that she wasn't killed then because she was promised to him she belonged to him and he had come now in this lifetime to collect her.

It is hard to evaluate the precise meaning of each photo of the mirror writing messages as the photographic record of the communication is incomplete and flashbulb glare obscures some of the extant messages.  Beyond any literal interpretation of extant messages, metaphorical or allegorical meanings might be overlooked by researchers unfamiliar with other documented cases of transcendental communication (with many of them profiled in articles at this blog).  Some of the messages seem to provide examples of intentional travesty in response to the family's certainty that they were being haunted by a demon.  Deborah said during the “30 Odd Minutes” interview: "We were just going to have to try to get rid of him.  That was the only way we were going to survive."

During a 2014 "Late Night In The Midlands" interview by Michael Vara, Deborah mentioned about the entity: "He would tell me about people that he had affected in past lives . . . It would tell me who was going to win political races before they would win, things like that . . . It did happen that everything he did tell me did come to be . . . We had something good in the house that would write on a different wall and it wrote almost in a . . . like having a poem.  And at the end of it, it would say, 'your friend, the holy trinity.'"

Another audio recording that I heard while researching this article was a You Tube video of Deborah Moffitt interviewed by Art Bell in 2015.  During the broadcast, Art reported suddenly seeing a mouse around two feet away from him yet the rodent was gone before he could take a photograph.  Deborah quickly told him, "You know, it's funny because we were infested by rats for two weeks."  She explained in the book: "In desperation I went into the bathroom and asked the entity to keep the rats out of the house.  I never received a response on the mirror, but from that day on we never saw or heard another rat in the house again."

Deborah mentioned that during the haunting events her mother-in-law prayed continually.  Deborah said:

I think her strong belief in God is what got her through this.  Because she believed that eventually God would win.  So goodness would win.  So I think that's what actually kept her sanity through this was a strong belief in God.

Listeners who are closely attentive to the recordings of interviews with Deborah Moffitt may notice occasional instances of 'Electronic Voice Phenomena' (EVP) consisting of abrupt words of unattributable speech of different vocal cadences (such as “NO”) heard momentarily between words of otherwise concordant speechAs I've mentioned before, readers unfamiliar with EVP will be surprised to learn that EVP communication is commonly noticeable on radio broadcasts and any unedited program recordings, including television broadcasts.

Parallels Between Case Studies: Unwelcomed and Testament

An antique bell and a pendulum with a face motif are two of the 'apports' reported to have manifested in the presence of the Moffitt family residing in Southern California.  A nickname used for the haunting presence was 'Mr. Entity.'
Two Centrahoma photos: the note at right reads "Rocks & pennies that hit inside my house Dec. 1st, 1990."  The predominant manifesting entity was known as 'Michael' by Bell / Mc Wethy family members.

Having learning about many 'talking poltergeist' cases or 'hauntings,' it seems obvious that the unique scope of 'paranormal' occurrences for each case—and also how the events are interpreted and reported—is influenced by the spiritual orientation of the experiencers.  In this article, I am reporting about some of the parallels that may be found between the Moffitt family case (Rancho Cucamonga 1987-1992) chronicled in Unwelcomed (2015) and the Bell/McWethy case (an eventful sequence of phenomena for the Centrahoma family began in 1990) which I investigated in 1995 as chronicled in Testament (1997).  In 1995 I returned home to my Los Angeles condo in Echo Park only to continue to experience phenomenal events.  There are also parallels between incidents in my own life and events described by Deborah Moffitt in her book.

Reflecting about some previous odd experiences and my research concerning 'talking poltergeist' accounts, I understood that the haunting presence was Angelic.  Gustav Davidson's  A Dictionary of Angels . . . (1967) includes about 'Michael': "Michael ('who is as God')—in Biblical and post-Biblical lore, Michael ranks as the greatest of all angels, whether in Jewish, Christian, or Islamic writings, secular or religious . . . He is chief of the order of virtues, chief of archangels, prince of the presence, angel of repentance, righteousness, mercy, and sanctification; also ruler of the 4th Heaven, tutelary sar (angelic prince) of Israel, guardian of Jacob, conqueror of Satan . . . ."

One of the videos featuring commentary of Deborah Moffitt includes some examples of hundreds of  'apports' that materialized in her home.
Left: a Caesars Lake Tahoe pendant was received by the Moffitts on the night that the family left for a Lake Tahoe vacation; right, my Oklahoma trip souvenir apports consisted of coins, stones, a nail, an "Amusement Centers" token, and a piece of costume jewelry with pearl and diamond symbols.

The Moffitts usually assumed the manifestations to be demonic with knives reported to have been a frequent object to change location or materialize.  Other apports collected by the Moffitts include rocks with a triangular shape and a spear head that a museum expert identified as being an antique from the Belgian Congo area in Africa.  It would seem that karmic considerations and the assumption of malevolence concerning the haunting presence brought corresponding apports.  In Centrahoma, there were metaphorical associations noticeable for unique apports such as a padlock and a package of Trouble perfume.  One might even notice that the three coins seen in the photo above each bear the proverb "In God We Trust"

The Moffitts of Southern California and the Bell / Mc Wethy family of Oklahoma are among countless people who found themselves experiencing uncommon 'supernatural' manifestations throughout the ages.  This blogger can only compare my state of mind at the time I went to investigate the Centrahoma 'talking poltergeist' case in 1995.  My motivation was to see what might be learned and not to evaluate what might be witnessed on the basis of any particular religious dogma or supposition.

While the Moffitts received messages written in soap on mirrors, the Centrahoma family conversed with a variety of disembodied voices identifying themselves with different names.  On several occasions in the Centrahoma house were found 'cryptograms' and an Egyptian Arabic message (written backwards) in lipstick on a mirror.  These communications were copied onto notebook paper by the family [see "Family Notes and Other Data (The Centrahoma Poltergeist)"].  When I began transcribing the microcassette tape recordings of my interviews with the family, there were often noticeable 'spirit messages' (unattributed speech at times very distinct in unfamiliar voices) and these words were included within parentheses in the transcripts.  I later learned that this type of paranormal occurrence is known categorically as 'Electronic Voice Phenomena' or 'EVP.'

On one occasion, 'Mr. Entity' left a symbol in baby powder on carpeting; while in the Centrahoma case, there was an incident when a design was left in bird gravel on the carpet.  Another detail of each of the Rancho Cucamonga and Centrahoma 'poltergeist' chronologies is that eggs were among the objects witnessed to be moved by an unseen Force.

The following excerpts from the two books provide ten examples of  the many parallels that may be found between these case studies.  Testament is available in a free Internet edition and quoted passages in this article are excerpts of interviews transcripts of microcassette recordings.

"To our disbelief a shower of pebbles began to fall on us.  Small stones fell seemingly from thin air . . . I bent down and picked up a handful of pebbles.  They were ice cold."
This transcript includes an incident where I witnessed a rock materialize.  I picked up the rock and it felt warm to the touch.

"The entity began writing more and more frequently on the mirror.  His writings reflected that he  must have listened to us constantly.  Running commentary on our lives and conversations became the main topic of his communications . . . Lee and Bill would have full conversations in Tobresh, thinking the entity wouldn't know what they were saying.  Much to their chagrin, the entity began replying to Lee on the mirror in Tobresh as well.  She tried using Spanish and Italian, but soon fluent replies began appearing on the mirror as well in those languages as well."

"Maxine: See?  He drew them on the mirror and I copied them.  With lipstick.  He’d use a whole tube of lipstick.
"Mark: I wonder what that means.
"Maxine: Part of it’s Egyptian."

"This was the only time I actually heard 'Prince.'  Booming laughter from upstairs reverberated through the house."

Testament Tape 4, Side 1 and Side 2
While driving a car in the Centrahoma area with Twyla in the passenger seat, there were two voice manifestations that I personally heard.  The first was a little boy giggling.  I wrote in a transcriber's note:

"(TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE: THE SPIRIT GIGGLING HEARD ON THE TAPE HERE SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS COMING FROM THE BACK SEAT. IT WAS HEARD AT THE TIME OF RECORDING AND HAD AN OTHERWORLDLY METALLIC TONE WITH A BLOOD-CHILLING EFFECT.)"

Later during the same drive I heard a deep adult male voice groaning that sounded like it was coming from the back seat.

"He ['Mr. Entity'] would take any religious objects the Warrens would give to us and either destroy them or throw them into the swimming pool.  The blessed religious medals that the Warrens gave us  to put in all the corners or the house disappeared, never to be seen again.

Testament Tape #5, Side #1
"Bill Mc Wethy: Alright. I’ll tell you the most spooky thing. To me, the most heart-rending part of it that I can really ascertain.  (“WHEN I HAD A”)  I had a cross and it had holy water in it.  (“OOOH”)  A souvenir (“YEAH”) filled from a hole in Wyoming.  I had it on a chain, put it around Twyla’s neck.  It disappeared.  Then we found it in another part of the house — (“UM-HUH”) the chain one place and the heart in another.  We picked it up, brought it back in here and put them back together.  At the same time this was going on, we were in the kitchen.  She went back (“HMMM”) to the bedroom and it disappeared again.  So it come back this time and the chain was broken.  I took this big safety pin here and just pinned it on her blouse.  When they were going with the neighbor, Frieda Severe, toward Dayton it disappeared on her chest with the windows rolled up.  There’s no way it could’ve gotten out of the car when it disappeared."

"I followed her gaze and looked down to see what appeared to be Lee's baby powder covering the floor . . . In the powder were spots that looked like footprints . . . The heel looked like a large semi-circle.  Where toes should have been were only small marks that looked like claws."

An incident is described when there was spilled coffee and Twyla was with a house visitor who also witnessed "feet marks.  It was running all the way over there but there were webbed feet marks.  Webbed like a duck’s."

"Mr. Entity wrote about the poor couple . . . He wrote, 'Thomas has a 12 inch dick . . .'"

An EVP that I heard used the slang word 'dick' and it was disturbing to include it in the book; however, the basis of the case study was to have verbatim transcripts so one of the EVP message sequences of the transcript for Tape #4, Side #2 with the last word being prognostic is: (“RIGHT NOW I’M LOOKING AT MY DICK — THAT AREA” “GOLLY” “YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE EROTIC IDIOM”)

"Suddenly I heard howling coming from the room next door. Bill and I burst into the room to find Bill Sr. sitting on the edge of his bed howling like a wolf.  His head was tilted back and his eyes were closed.  It was unbelievable.  He was making sounds that I didn't believe capable of him.  I walked over to him with great trepidation and shook him gently.  He just looked at me blankly and laid down again."
"Mark: . . . I mean there were some weird things going on in Alhambra.  The guy in the bed next to me was howling like in “The Exorcist.”  (“UH-HUH”)
"Larry: (laughs)
"Mark: So I told him he was snoring.  I woke him up and said, “You’re snoring.”
"Larry: Yeah.  Rather than say, “Excuse me, but you’re howling like a human coyote,” which might have upset him a little bit."

"Billy Joe: Yeah.
"Twyla: He said 'HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.'"
