In Comparison: Four Transcendental Requests

In this article, excerpts are presented offering examples of some phenomenal requests found in the annals of transcendental communication, encompassing reports from flying saucer 'contactees' and psychic/trance mediums.
Truman Bethurum while aboard a flying saucer was provided with letters that offer proof of his experiences.  The first book published about the case is Aboard a Flying Saucer (1954).

There have been previous blog articles about the Truman Bethurum flying saucer contactee case (including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).  Truman wrote about boarding a flying saucer on eleven occasions and meeting 'Aura Rhanes,' the female captain ("approximately four feet, six inches" tall) of the mysterious spacecraft.  Her crew were also "olive-skinned, dark-haired and dark-eyed people" with the tallest of the men "about five feet, two or three inches."

Truman later described being at home when he experienced a unique visit from Aura (The Voice of the Planet Clarion, 1957).  The recalled commentary is not verbatim.

"VISIT IN PRESCOTT, ARIZONA"
First Week of December, 1955

Aura said, "I want you to find sufficient land in your area to promote and build a 'Sanctuary of Thought,' away from any populous center, high above your town, where the people of your Earth—all people—may come to visit in a healthy, peaceful atmosphere!  Where all may hear and be heard!

"A SANCTUARY where religious beliefs, racial status, poverty or wealth will neither be an asset nor a liability!  A place where equality alone will be recognized!  Where only the laws of your land, the laws of your Bible and the rights of your fellowmen, will be your accepted guide!

"You are directed to locate a desirable location of sufficient size for the expansion of the Sanctuary as conditions warrant.

"You are to make this your determination, and to see this project through to completion!

"The financing of the complete Sanctuary is to be through your friends and my friends!  Yes, the friends of PEACE in this world of yours!

"My purpose in bringing this message to you is so that you and your people of your Earth planet can, and will, bring PEACE to your troubled world!

"Yes, this MUST and WILL be done!"

There were additional instructions as recalled by Truman.  Some more details of the incident are included in The People of the Planet Clarion (1970) edited and compiled by Timothy Green Beckley.  The book presented a compilation of unpublished material by Truman.

On or about December 1, 1955, while I was living in a little yellow house on Granite Street in Prescott, Arizona, I was awakened in the middle of the night by AURA RHANES walking into my room from the parlor!

This proved how true was her previous assertion, that she could find anyone anywhere at any time.

She was dressed as I had seen her before, with a black velvet jacket or blouse and a red pleated skirt, except that this time she was she was covered with a raincoat that appeared to be of a heavy transparent plastic, of brownish-grey hue.  After her radiant smile of greeting, her face became very serious indeed as she leaned against the bureau by the side of my bed.

There was a description of what happened after Aura's discourse.

Then she walked out the way she came, after nodding adieu to me with another brilliant smile.  I wanted to follow her, but something held me fast, sitting on the side of my bed.

Another person was in the next bedroom, and the next morning she told me she had overheard every word and surmised that it was AURA RHANES.  She wanted to come into my room to see her too, but that same "something" also had held her so that she could not move when she tried to arise from her bed.  To verify her assertion, I asked her to repeat some things she had overheard, and they were correct.  She was an unseen witness to this phenomenon.

As it hadn't been raining when AURA visited me, I wondered why she had worn a raincoat.  Was she using it as a portentous symbol of something in the future from which I would need protection, or was it as a suggestion to cultivate endurance and persistence in following her advice?

Another of the 'contactees' (a topic of a previous blog article when 'Diane' from Venus materialized during a Los Angeles seance)—Dana Howard—wrote that 'Diane' instructed her to erect 'The Alter in the Wilderness Shrine,' which Howard described would be "a nucleating center for the healing of the ills of mankind."  Howard planned to build the shrine in the vicinity of San Jacinto Mountain.

Dana Howard's books include My Flight to Venus (1954), Over The Threshold (1957) and Up Rainbow Hill (1959).

Here are excerpts from Diane—She Came from Venus (1956).

The beautiful DIANE came to your author sixteen years ago.  Her melodious voice vibrated through the vastness of the cosmos.  This same voice has been heard on many occasions since the release of MY FLIGHT TO VENUS.  Sometimes it has followed me over the cactus-studded desert where I love to roam.  It has come in silent moments driving along the highways.

A section of the book was entitled "The Discourses of Diane."  The following passages are from the final discourse entitled "ON—HEALING."

"Inspired vision is the harbinger of events to come.  One of the great revelations of your day came when you were told to erect a healing shrine on this strip of hallowed earth.  Countless miracle healings will take place here.  Many who come to visit will be carried away on waves of spiritual ecstasy.  Others will experience newly awakened minds.  There will be a few to whom illumination will come.  In the days ahead this holy shrine will be one of the contact points between the Planet Venus and the Planet Earth.  Many will hear the voices from other spheres.

"My daughter . . . the sacred incandescent flame enkindled in you before departure for our land of glory will be likewise enkindled in others.  I say to you, keep the incense pots always burning.  Keep your fires alive on the holy altar.  You will then be able to sea our beacon lights.  You will be able to communicate with us.  Moreover you will know GOD in the true light of knowing GOD.

"I take my leave now, my daughter, for I have much work to do on other planes.  I work not only on the concrete planes of existence, but in the etheric worlds as well.  I go now to my etheric home on Ether-Cana.

"I shall return—but in the interim of waiting, carry on your work with an enlightened heart.  Fear not the setbacks that will be strewn in your path.  The door to transcendental realizations has been opened.  Use your potentialities to the utmost limit.  When in doubt—you will always find the answer here in your desert sanctuary.

"God bless you, my earth child . . . till we meet again."

DIANE

Dana Howard and Truman Bethurum each resided in the Los Angeles area during a period of their lifetimes.  The People of the Planet Clarion is available in a 1995 edition entitled Messages from the People of the Planet Clarion: The True Experiences of Truman Bethurum edited and with an introduction by Timothy Green Beckley.  In a chapter about his life before his first contact, Truman mentioned having bought a home near Bellflower, California.  Contactees Orfeo Angelucci and Daniel Fry (whose cases are reported in many previous articles at this blog) also resided in Southern California during an interval of their lives.

A famous medium who wrote about visiting Southern California was Eileen Garrett (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).  Among the anecdotes in Eileen’s autobiographical book Awareness (1943) was one that occurred at Cannes in France during World War II.

The incident occurred at a small thirteenth century church, St. Cassian's, where Eileen wrote that she heard St. Cassian speak to her about the history of the site.  She explained that at the time she had three friends for whom life was being drastically difficult.

So, at last, under the pressure of the time and place, I asked St. Cassian for three miracles—that the disaster which threatened each of my friends might be solved and averted in right ways, and that their present distresses might be turned into joy.  And as the weeks went by I had news from each of my three friends.  The illness of one had been healed; the financial threat to the second had been relieved by the  notice of an unexpected legacy; the danger had been definitely removed from the future of the third.

So I went again to the little church to thank St. Cassian for his three miracles.  And in the timeless silence of the empty place he said to me, "You asked for three miracles.  I ask for but one.  Will you do it for me?  I caused this shrine to be erected in order that the faith of men might be justified through the healing of their distresses.  But that purpose has been forgotten.  You know the power is here, do you not?  Will you, then, restore this shrine to its original intention, for only in that way can it again fully justify its existence?"

"I am willing in spirit and gratitude," I said, "but the flesh . . . What can I do?  I have neither money nor prestige sufficient . . ."

"You recognize the power, and you have the faith."

"Yes, I have," I acknowledged.  "And I will do what you ask—somehow."

"It is well," he said.  "You can also show me a kindness.  In the Tanneron, I have another little shrine.  It is known as the Shrine of St. Cassian.  Be good enough to go there and open the door—that is all, just open the door."

A few days later I drove out and found the little chapel, which was in a ruinous condition, and I opened the door, as I had been directed.  As I did so, three bats flew out, and I knew, strangely but clearly, that the little building no longer held the spirit of holiness, but was consigned to a fate of utter ruin and disintegration.

Incidentally I may say that the Church of St. Cassian, at Cannes, still awaits rededication to its original mission.  To do something about this is my uncompleted undertaking.  I do not possess St. Cassian's facility in miracles; yet I am very sure within myself that when this war is ended, and France is recovering from her wounds, St. Cassian's at Cannes will become an important center for the manifestation of new faith and healing in the world . . .

Eileen divulged that upon telling of this experience to her friends, she had been asked, "But how did he speak to you?  Were you in trance?"  She explained: "I heard him speak to me directly, as one person might hear another speaking distinctly in an adjoining room.  It was an unusual experience for me, in the drowsy sunlit afternoon—an aural experience, direct and purely sensory."

An account of a 'phenomenal request' made through trance mediumship is included in Ena Twigg's 1972 autobiography.  Presented below, this chapter is entitled "Philip Communicates" and subtitled "Advice To The Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship."

The information is presented: "It is only on very rare occasions that Philip, Ena's spiritual teacher, communicates with her sitters.  He uses the medium's body and voice to bring advanced teaching and enlightenment to those invited for this special occasion and purpose.  His communications to the president and officers of the Spiritual Foundation Fellowship are of heightened interest because of their rarity."

A small group of Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship officers met with Mrs. Twigg in August of 1970 for the purpose of receiving guidance for the organization.  Philip, Ena Twigg's spirit teacher, made it a rare occasion by coming through to advise the group, which included the Reverend Ross Sweeny, pastor of the Riverside Methodist Church, in Riverside, Illinois, the current president of SFF; his wife, Agnes Sweeny; William Holes, vice-president of the SFF; and Paul Wilkinson.

Said Philip: "We wish you to form small dedicated units who will sit in silent meditation and open themselves to their God, not for the sake of self but to understand what God is going to use them for more fully.  We want very much to see a place situated in your country where people can gather and foregather, be instructed and guided.  They would be assisted by those who are sensitive enough to our world, in whatever capacity those sensitives can serve.  It would be much more than a school or a church.  It would be like a university."

"The blessing is already there, and the building is in the etheric already," Philip said through Mrs. Twigg.  "There is water running near this ground and it is high ground and there are mountains somewhere, right?"  The group agreed.

"My sons and my dear daughter, when you have this place solid on your earth, will you invite us into the interior of the building that we might strengthen, support, guide, instruct, and give what we know of wisdom . . . and all we have of love?  These things are important.  Keep faith.  Keep in tune with the universal harmony. . . . People have been caught up in a rhythm of destruction and materialism, and so our world dropped you as stars in your environment to shine."

At one point Mrs. Twigg said: "You feel the power around you.  You feel the sense of belonging to your God, and Philip says, 'My children, if you knew the joy you give us giving us the opportunity to speak to you in simple language.  This is so treasured by us.  Your world is so deaf.  It does not feel the gentle persuasion from our world.  There is a better way, is there not, and Jesus said that he would not leave you comfortless, didn't he? . . .

"'This is one joy in our world: if we find those who listen, take the little message to your heart and into your soul.  Do you know what your soul is?  You have found your souls.  You know it is you.  It is you.  And the soul and the spirit welded together will forge onwards and upwards to new dimensions of understanding.'"

In one segment of the sitting Philip spoke of Agnes Sweeny.  "There is one who would long to teach and to give instruction, and he would be behind the lady," he said.  "Be aware, and the words will be given to you after your prayer; and the door is open, and through it is the new insight, the new strength, the new courage."

Suddenly, partway through the sitting, a voice came through Mrs. Twigg, speaking with a strong foreign accent.  It said: "I was a little boy who was killed in the Spanish War, and this lady not have me speak before.  First peoples I have ever speaked to."

Agnes Sweeney: We are very happy to have you.

Twigg/Pedro: I am Pedro and much happy, much happy, much good happiness.

Agnes Sweeney: You are joyful.

Twigg/Pedro: Yes, and I have come to tell you something.  I have come to make myself known to this Aunt Agnes lady.  I come because I want you to know me.  And I will not stay with this lady.  I will come with you.

Agnes Sweeney: Come with me, Pedro.

Twigg/Pedro: Philip said to me—he is a wise old man and he said to me, "Come, little one, you make them speak.  You speak to them . . . because you for son Agnes lady, and you go to altar in a church, you know, and you put little flowers for the children.  I will help you, please."  When I was killed, I no longer had a body, and I was Catholic, you see? . . . And I do not know what to do without a body because the body was gone; it was broken up . . . the big bang . . . and the body was gone, and so I had a big job to wait to put myself together.  And Philip said, "Now is the time; here they are." . . . And I want you to pray for me.

Pedro said he had a donkey with him.  "Why not a donkey in our world?  Because Jesus sat on a donkey, and if it is good enough for Jesus . . ."

Pedro said again to come into the church and put flowers there, and "the children from my world will come and pray.  This is what we try to do: make two worlds one."

When Pedro left, Philip came in to say, "That was a surprise, wasn't it?  But it was necessary that you go nearer to him, have him as one of your helpers and supporters, a little child who knew little of love and little of life and much of poverty and much of fear.  He has now found security, and he is now ready."

Ena Twigg commented about 'Philip' in her autobiography:

On the Other Side there are highly evolved entities who come to us to teach, to help us evolve spiritually, and sometimes to impart to us the plans that are in preparation in their world for our world.  Teachers like Philip are never involved in bringing evidence of survival or of the departed loved ones of sitters.  We love our teacher dearly, and many learned and advanced people—scholars, clergy, government leaders—have come to our home to listen to Philip.  Of course, I am always in a trance, but we have many recordings and transcriptions of his lectures.

Considering Evidence for the 'Supernormal': The Case of 'Patience Worth'

There have been three previous blog articles (1, 2, 3) about Pearl Lenore Curran (maiden name Pollard; 1883-1937).  An online edition is available of The Case of Patience Worth: A Critical Study of Certain Unusual Phenomena (1927) by Walter Franklin Prince, Ph.D. (1863-1934).  Metaphysical perspectives chronicled in the 'Patience Worth' case of transcendental communication correlate with many other cases, sometimes in subtle or obscure ways.  Similar to a myriad other reports categorized with such terms as 'mediumship' or 'channeling,' the author questioned:

. . . how literature displaying such knowledge, genius and versatility of literary expression, philosophic depth, piercing wit, spirituality, swiftness of thought, ability to carry on complex mental operations, and apparent divination of other minds, could have originated in Mrs. John H. (Pearl Lenore) Curran of St. Louis, who by her own testimony and by abundant other evidences, neither possesses or ever did possess the requisite knowledge, who never had shown literary talent nor had literary practice or ambitions, and who never had displayed the other mental qualities in any comparable degree.

One chapter concerning the "mechanism of delivery" is a description of how early in the case—beginning in July 1913—the Ouija Board was first used and several years later abandoned.

At first the delivery by Patience Worth was accomplished by the usual ouija board method, the letters of the alphabet being indicated by the pointer.  But little by little the letters began to come directly into Mrs. Curran's mind, so that the use of the pointer gradually became a mere automatism, and by 1918 the record shows that it simply circled aimlessly.  The development of the power to see vivid mental pictures while composition was going on kept pace with the increasing rapidity of the oral giving out of letters, which at length became so rapid that nobody not accustomed by long practice could possibly follow them and separate them into words, even in his mind.  On March 13, 1919, while a poem was coming, Mrs. Curran happened to look into the eyes of a sitter, and noticed that the letters kept coming into her mind just the same, and, although she still moved the pointer in circles, thereafter she cultivated the habit more and more of looking away from the board.  The next stage was when words began to come without the necessity of their being spelled, and on Nov. 24, 1919, for the first time an entire poem came by words only.  On Jan. 5, 1920, it was set down: "Mrs. Curran had not spelled out six words in this entire record, and the rate of speed was something awful.  A poem was secretly timed, and it came 110 words to a minute."  On Feb. 12th, 1920, Mrs. Curran was finally weaned from the ouija board.  After she for a long time "had been circling the board about with the pointer as usual and reciting the matter as Patience gave it to her," at Mr. Yost's suggestion the board was laid aside and the "pointer" was placed on a chair, with the hands of the two placed upon it.  A verse having been thus successfully produced, they discarded the pointer, and let their hands simply touch the chair.  At first Mrs. Curran felt "somewhat lost and confused" and Patience Worth dictated a sort of a sermon of broad application on the text "be not confused."  Then Mrs. Curran "sat back to try without the chair, but still felt lost with her hands idle, and asked for something to hold.  Mr. Yost offered his scarf-pin, and another poem was delivered."  The alterations did not affect the quality of the product noticeably.  It is recorded eleven days later that Mrs. Curran was continuing to get along without the board, though having a little difficulty when first beginning a session, which difficulty soon passed off.

The following excerpts are from the "Introduction" along with the concluding paragraphs of the "Summary" (with footnotes in parentheses).  These passages show no consideration of what has been expressed in previous blog articles as the 'Oneness' of a shared subconscious and Superconscious Mind among all living creatures.

From INTRODUCTION

When, in 1906, Dr. Morton Prince published his now well-known book entitled The Dissociation of a Personality, he intended it to be regarded what it is called in the supplementary title, A Biographical Study in Abnormal Psychology.  All the facts therein contained were supposed to be accounted for on known psychological principles.  Nevertheless, although it is hinted by Dr. Schiller, (See Proceedings S. P. R. Part 74, page 397, for Dr. Schiller's remarks.  The passage by Dr. Hyslop has not been located, but it exists.) and alleged by Dr. Hyslop, that certain curious facts in that case were not published, on the basis of the facts which were printed another eminent psychologist, Dr. William McDougall, was driven to the conclusion that the most logical way of explaining the "secondary personality Sally" would be by assuming her to be a spirit.  And although the Doris Case of Multiple Personality, in which all the facts were exhibited, was also written as a psychological study, yet the eminent scholar of Oxford, Dr. F. C. S. Schiller, found in it impressive evidence for the supernormal, largely connected with "the secondary personality Sleeping Margaret," and her claim to be also an invading, though benevolent intelligence.  (The reasons given by Drs. McDougall and Schiller will be quoted in the final section of this volume.)

Likewise, this study of "Patience Worth" is undertaken primarily as a psychological one, yet I shall not wait for the others to perceive and declare that "Patience Worth" may be, for reasons to a certain extent identical with those which existed in the Beauchamp and Doris cases, precisely what she, in common certainly with "Sleeping Margaret" and possibly with "Sally," said she was, an external intelligence somehow in contact with and able to use Mrs. Curran's brain . . .

At the same time, I shall not argue that this is the case, nor shall I argue strenuously against or for that third and mystical theory that "Patience Worth" represents the results of an unusual reception of knowledge and power from the "Cosmic Consciousness."

This is the thesis which I formulate after a ten months' study of the data: EITHER OUR CONCEPT OF WHAT WE CALL THE SUBCONSCIOUS MUST BE RADICALLY ALTERED, SO AS TO INCLUDE POTENCIES OF WHICH WE HITHERTO HAVE HAD NO KNOWLEDGE, OR ELSE SOME CAUSE OPERATING THROUGH BUT NOT ORIGINATING IN THE SUBCONSCIOUSNESS OF MRS. CURRAN MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED.  In the former case we normalize what hitherto would have seemed "supernormal" (in the same manner as hypnosis, which a hundred years ago was thought to involve a supernormal claim, has been normalized); in the second case we admit the supernormal.

From SUMMARY

The eminent psychologist, Dr. William McDougall, in 1907, published a paper dealing with cases of divided personality, particularly that known as the Beaucamp case.  ("The Case of Sally Beauchamp," by William McDougall, M.Sc., M.B., in Proceedings of S. P. R., Part 52, pp. 400-431.)  He said: "If we are to discuss these strange cases with any hope of profit, we must give rein to speculation, and, as was said above, there are no established facts that set certain limits to hypothesis. . . ."

He points out the inconsistency between Dr. Morton Prince's interpretation of the case and his data: e. g., Dr. Prince shows that the "personality" Sally existed co-consciously side by side, as it were, with both personalities B I and B IV, and still continued after B I and B IV were consolidated, and yet holds, apparently with good reason, that B I and B IV, when synthetized, resulted in the original and complete Miss Beauchamp.  "Dr. Prince seems, in fact, to have set out with the conviction that every case of multiple personality is to be regarded as resulting from dissociation of a normal personality, and to have allowed this prejudice to limit the range of his search for hypotheses, and to blind him to the unmistakable implications of his own descriptions."  After giving the reasons from data furnished by Dr. Prince why Sally appears to have been superior to any normal individual, Dr. McDougall says: "In short, to assert, as Dr. Prince does, that Sally is a split-off fragment of Miss B. is to maintain that the part may be greater than the whole."

"If a number of cases of the type of Sally Beauchamp, as described by Dr. Prince, were to be described by other equally careful, and credible observers, I think the weight of their testimony would be irresistible.  (Nine years later appeared The Doris Case of Multiple Personality, the data in which, generally accepted by psychologists, emphatically support those of the Beauchamp Case.)  The conclusion would give very strong support to the spiritistic explanation of such cases as Mrs. Piper, and would go far to justify the belief in the survival of human personality after the death of the body.  It is for this reason that Sally Beauchamp seems to me of so great interest to this Society."

In 1918, Dr. F. C. S. Schiller, of Oxford University, one of the most brilliant thinkers in our age along lines of psychology and philosophy, wrote a review of The Doris Case of Multiple Personality.  (Proceedings of S. P. R., Part 74, pp. 386-403.)  He devotes considerable space to "Sleeping Margaret" who, after three personalities had been banished, "remained a great puzzle."  "With her mature intelligence, detached attitude and curiously restricted control of the body, she was obviously unlike the alternating personalities. . . . She alone was not amenable to suggestion," and she continued to manifest after the case was apparently cured.  Dr. Schiller treats with respect, though not expressed acceptance, Sleeping Margaret's claim that she was a guarding spirit.  And he says:

The Doris Fischer case suggests that in all such affairs there may be a good deal more than meets the ordinary doctor's eye.  It seems to point to a whole array of mysteries which are usually not explored because medical prejudice fights shy of them and medical attention is directed elsewhere.   We may take it that medical records are usually incomplete where they approach the supernormal. Incidents bordering upon this region are recorded, if at all, only apologetically and under protest.  Nevertheless, it is fairly well recognized that cases of "dissociation" exhibit hyperaesthesias as well as anaesthesias, though rarely in such abundance as in our case.  Supernormal knowledge was observed in other cases also, e. g., in "Alma Z.," "Lurancy Vennum," and "Mr. Hanna."  As for the Beauchamp case, it will be remembered that "Sally" seemed so supernormal to Mr. McDougall as to drive that great authority into an argument for sheer spiritism.  (Proceedings of S. P. R., Vol. XIX., p. 430.)  In the Doris Fischer case the supernormal, though still subordinate to the psychological interest, bulks large—perhaps only because it was fully and fairly recorded.  At any rate it is to be accounted a piece of good luck rather than an anomaly that the case fell into the hands of investigators who were not afraid to explore its supernormal side.  Nor can it be too strongly impressed on future investigators that scientific completeness and honesty require them not to omit what look like supernormal incidents merely because they do not understand them.  We know so very little about the intimate "nature" and structure of "souls," and about their disorders and potentialities, that we should not allow any a priori prejudice to impede the investigation of whatever facts we can observe.  Nor should we acquiesce too easily in terms like "dissociation" as the beginning and end of wisdom.

Drs. McDougall and Schiller are not content to settle down on mere formulas, nor will they blink difficulties, insufficiencies, inconsistencies.  Conscious of the ocean of ignorance that surrounds the little island of human knowledge and of the ease with which the new knowledge which caused nausea yesterday is digested today, they are not afraid to seek explanatory hypotheses and to look them in the face.  They do not shrink to utter the dread word "supernormal."  They call on investigators to produce their facts in full and to recognize all of the facts in any attempt at explanation, and to defer explanation rather than to adopt a theory which either ignores or is unjust to the facts.  As Dr. Schiller says: "Nothing is more likely to impede investigation than premature acceptance of 'explanations'."

The sentiments I have attributed to these eminent scholars are my own.  It is far better to gather, test, authenticate, analyze and synthetically set forth the facts to the extent of one's ability even though no explanation is even suggested, than to outline a magnificent theory with little examination and much ignoring of the facts.  For ten months my time has been mostly devoted to the study of this case by all the methods possible for me to employ.  No single discovered datum has been omitted, no clue or hint from any source neglected.  It is not possible for any fact that shall come to light to disconcert me, since I am not wedded to any theory.  Once again, in the closing words of this book I invoke the whole world to tell what it knows of Mrs. Curran.  If there should be reason I will retreat as cheerfully as I have advanced, but, after the arduous and unremitting labor now drawn to a close, am not sanguine of having the opportunity to retreat from or to modify this proposition:

Either our concept of what we call the subconscious must be radically altered, so as to include potencies of which we hitherto have had no knowledge, or else some cause operating through but not originating in the subconsciousness of Mrs. Curran must be acknowledged.

The Patience Worth Collection is archived at the Missouri History Museum.  Below is shown one of the original documents offering a poem.

Channeler Ryuho Okawa's Invitation to Happiness

A recent book by Ryuho Okawa is Invitation to Happiness: 7 inspirations from your inner angel (2015).  The book has nine sections that include some suggested workbook exercises:

An invitation from your inner angel

a calm mind
THE PERFECT BEGINNING

the true you
AWAKENING TO YOUR DIVINE NATURE

hardships & failures
THE TOOLS FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

gratitude
THE GATEWAY TO HAPPINESS

forgiveness
CULTIVATING COMPASSION WITHIN

a joyful life
SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH THE POSITIVE

dreams & goals
KEYS TO EMPOWERING YOUR POTENTIAL

writing a prayer to your inner angel

Interested to learn more about the inspiration for the book, I found an "Author Story" interview video with a representative of Ryuho's organization Happy Science, Mia Tomikawa.  Having worked on the English translation of this book, Mia described Invitation to Happiness as "a practical guidebook to becoming happier."  When asked what is meant by 'Inner Angel,' Mia commented:

"Well 'Inner Angel' is a spiritual Existence that supports us and guides us and stands besides us.  And it's — I think in Christianity people might be more familiar with the term 'guardian angel.'  And it's essentially the same.  And we believe that we all have a guardian angel or guardian spirit or inner angel with us that's always watching over us and guiding us to lead a better life."

A "references" page lists 17 books written by Ryuho Okawa that have been used as references for Invitation to HappinessSome book excerpts selected for this article remind one how important it is to be optimistic about life and how provocative it can be to consider the question of happiness.

Experiencing one's 'inner angel' is perpetual and is only limited by the degree of an individual's awareness.  Occurrences involving 'synchronicity' and aspects of case studies encompassing 'unexplained phenomena' also make comprehensible the nonlocality of our interconnectedness.

There's a spiritual existence that supports each of us, guides us, and stands besides us in life.

Your soul is much more than the energy that resides in your physical body: it is your infinite source of power and is connected to a vast energy with great wisdom.

To find joy, find your inner peace.  When you learn to live with a steady, calm, unreactive mind, your stillness will reflect the world, other people, and—above all—who you truly are.

. . . by contemplating your words, actions, and thoughts, you can clean your mind.  A calm and clean mind is essential to receiving inspirations and guidance from your inner angel.

When we are aligned with our inner angels, it becomes intuitive to make the right decisions and discern which direction to take in life.  When we face major life decisions about things like career, love, and relationships, we're able to sense when something is true for us and when it is not.  We begin to receive inspirations about the decisions we should make to walk on the right path.

. . . we can fulfill our purpose no matter what challenges we find ourselves in — even if we are confined to a hospital bed, have lost our job, or have been deserted by our own family.  The environments surrounding us are all part of our individual lessons to help us fulfill our mission of light
.

We've all received the help, love, and support of many people, both directly and indirectly.  We are who we are today because of the love of a great many people
.

Every day, we can choose to give gratefully to everyone and repay the love we have been given throughout our lives.  We can approach every day as a kind of experiment: how much more love can we give than take?

Even though it may be a bit frightening, imagining how we'd feel if we had to leave this world today can help us find out how we want to practice being loving
.

Sometimes, the challenges of daily life can get the best of us, and we can spend whole days, weeks, or more preoccupied with our own lives.  So now let's shift our focus away from ourselves, our pride, our self-admiration, and our self-preservation and take a moment to reflect on what we were able to do for others today, this week, this month, and this year.
We have the power to become whatever type of consciousness we wish to be and to choose our actions as well.  Conflict often comes when we rely on our own standards to criticize, condemn, or judge others as they act according to their own will.

When we stand in other people's shoes and speak to ourselves from their perspective, it changes how we think about speaking to them and helps us cultivate compassion and forgiveness.

There are dimensions of other people that we never see.  Remembering this can help us maintain an open, compassionate, nonjudgmental mind.

When we truly honor our own and everyone else's right to and responsibility for happiness, we will be able to create the kind of world we'd all like to see.

Worrying that things may take a turn for the worse doesn't serve us in any way, and neither does focusing on negative thoughts that keep us stuck in the past.

Our physical lives will come to an end some day, but our souls continue on.  What our future becomes depends on how we've lived our lives and what we've learned in this lifetime.

As a final note, upon watching the "Author Story" interview video (30:59) with Mia Tomikawa, there were many noticeable Electronic Voice Phenomena utterances and unattributed sounds while I listened to the conversation with interviewer Alexander Lim.  This is further evidence of the angelic force interacting with us.

Here are a few examples of when during the recording may be heard some apparent EVP words:

4:15 "SO"
11:57 "LIKE"
19:30 "LIKE" "NO"
27:01 "YOU KNOW"
28:14 "THOUGH"

Channeling the 'Guardian Spirits' of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump

Ryuho Okawa started receiving spiritual messages in 1981 and in 1986 founded Happy Science, "a spiritual movement dedicated to bringing greater happiness to humankind . . ."  An unusual aspect of his channeling involves 'guardian spirits' of contemporary, living human beings.  This is his perspective of the 'guardian spirits' as articulated in his 2015 book Messages from Heaven:

Guardian spirits are a part of our souls, or a part of the consciousness of the people living on Earth; they reflect our thoughts and personalities.  Everyone has a guardian spirit that provides spiritual guidance throughout the person's life.

Ryuho has explained that he retains his own consciousness while channeling.

My soul remains in my body the entire time the spirit is speaking through me.  It is like having two souls (spirits) inside my body.  So I am able to hear the messages of the spirits, ask questions, and listen to the answers as myself.  I can play two roles at the same time—I can ask questions and answer them.  This is how I conduct my spiritual message sessions.

I am reminded of channeler Paulina Peavy's comment during her 1958 Long John Nebel radio interview, ". . . their voices and mine sometime are simultaneous."  The complexity of the transcripts in Messages from Heaven should dissuade one from ignoring Ryuho's case as a hoax.  A 2016 book provides an example of a channeling session with Ryuho involving a 'guardian spirit': The Trump Card in the United States: Spiritual Messages from the Guardian Spirit of Donald Trump.
A spiritual interview with "the guardian spirit of Donald Trump" was conducted on January 5, 1916.  The interview was in English although Ryuho's usual language is Japanese.  Clips of the interview may be seen in a You Tube video with Ryuho showing some difficulty with English expression.  Perhaps in the future the video of entire channeling sessions in English will be made available for researchers.

Other clips of videos documenting Ryuho's channeling sessions are also available, including in promotional videos about English language sessions with the guardian spirits of Bashar al-Assad of Syria, Nelson Mandela and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.  Readers unfamiliar with Ryuho's case may be startled with the grandiosity as he is labeled as one "who holds the greatest spiritual power."  How he has perceived himself is a topic of two previous blog articles: "Ryuho Okawa's Happy Science" and "Messages from Heaven".

Ryuho was born on July 7, 1956 and his unusual circumstances have enabled him to publish more than 2,000 books.  In 2010, he received a Guinness World Record for publishing 52 books in a year and in 2013, he published 106 books within a year.

Four years ago, an article was published quoting Hillary Clinton's 'guardian spirit.'  The article may be read at one of the websites publicizing the work of Ryuho Okawa and is entitled:

The article offers some information about 'guardian spirits':

[Note] These spiritual messages were channeled through Ryuho Okawa.  However, please note that because of his high level of enlightenment, his way of receiving spiritual messages is fundamentally different from other psychic mediums who undergo trances and are completely taken over by the spirits they are channeling.

Each human soul is made up of six soul siblings, one of whom acts as the guardian spirit of the person living on earth.  People living on earth are connected to their guardian spirits at the innermost subconscious level.  They are a part of people’s very souls, and therefore, exact reflections of their thoughts and philosophies.

However, please note that these spiritual messages are opinions of the individual spirits and may contradict the ideas or teachings of the Happy Science Group.

Among the topics in the article are international affairs in the Orient from the vantage point of 2012 during the Obama reelection campaign.  The word 'trumps' is found in the concluding portion of the article when there are comments from 'Clinton's guardian spirit' about the Happiness Realization Party, the political party established by Ryuho Okawa.

Clinton's G.S. I'm gathering information, and I know that you are being watched by China.  I have the feeling that you may, at some stage, be a "golden egg" for America.

It is constantly observing this religion in Japan that “trumps the media,” and has an extremely political message.  This religion, that has a message about politics and economics, and can criticize the prime minister, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the Bank of Japan, is now emerging.

You are probably also engaging in party activities, but if your organization possesses political authority in the real sense, then you are trustworthy.

As typical with individual orientations to the world's problems, at times countries are considered as sovereign entities and other nations as competitors.  Among people in positions of governmental authority, the propensity to make decisions on the basis of 'assumed imperative' can result with conflict and strife throughout the world.  Here are two examples —

South Korea is rehashing its hostile relationship with Japan from a deep-seated hatred of the past, but basically this will probably be of benefit to China.  Because China is currently adopting a national strategy of uprooting U.S. and Japan relations, South Korea will further drive a wedge between the two countries.

And finally, America and China will go head-to-head.  For this reason, we cannot disregard that there will gradually be a knock-on effect like a game of Othello.

When decisions of individual government leaders result with actions hostile to the interests of individuals in another country, they may be oblivious to spiritual considerations and be intent on furthering commercial interests of their 'country' (or any paperwork principality) such as "its aim is to . . . capture the surrounding nations" (a sentence Clinton's G.S. uses in relation to China).  A war may result from an assumed imperative of a single leader, who may not even be aware of his or her own responsibility.

The following is the quoted response when Clinton's G.S. is asked, "Does the Secretary of State Clinton have something like a strategy to lead China to democratization?"

There are human rights activists at work here and there, so the U.S. is supporting democratization in different ways.  Without naming countries, the U.S. is providing activists with a range of assistance and support.

It will soon be said, that China will say, that America too has fallen rather low.

Um.  Not surprisingly, the weakening economically is painful.  We need  our economy to become a bit stronger.

Clinton's G.S. articulated a perspective of the Republican party constituency that reflects their assumed imperatives as may be observed.

The Republicans lack compassion for the weak, and say that people have to look after themselves and the state will shift its emphasis to what only the state can do.

If you think about it, they will raise taxes because they are a party that will mount such a military offensive, but they are essentially aiming for a "small government," and have a tendency to try to increase capitalists.

Also in 2012 was published Ryuho's spiritual interview book The Next President: Spiritual Interviews with the Guardian Spirits of Newt Gingrich vs. Mitt Romney vs. Rick Santorum.  Information about the book is presented at an Amazon page.  Other books in the series include the names of some famous names living in this world as well as people who've made the transition to the afterlife, including Barack ObamaMargaret Thatcher, Vladimir Putin, Mother Teresa, Steve Jobs and Sir Winston Churchill.

Ryuho's new book concerning the 'guardian spirit' of Donald Trump offers information about Ryuho Okawa's 'Spiritual Interview Series' of books:

Since 2010, Master Ryuho Okawa has published over 350 spiritual messages, in Japanese, from the spirits of  historical men and women and the guardian spirits of today's living figures.

Through this series, Master Okawa hopes to show readers that the spirit world and spirits are real, and that understanding these spiritual truths can bring a peaceful end to international conflicts and create solutions for a variety of global crises.

These messages are taped in front of live audiences, and many are eventually published.

Some of these books are available in English translations.  More of his perspective is shared —

. . . Master Okawa usually softens the dominancy of his consciousness.  This way, he is able to keep his own philosophies out of the way and ensure that the spiritual messages are pure expressions of the spirits he is channeling.

. . . guardian spirits have detailed and precise knowledge of the brother or sister soul who is living on Earth.

Each one of us has a guardian spirit . . .

They are a part of our very souls, and therefore, they are close reflections of our personalities and philosophies.  They speak very openly and honestly about the deepest ideas and philosophies of their soul-siblings on Earth.  At the same time, we, the living, are not necessarily conscious of everything that our guardian spirits think because their thoughts lie at the deepest levels of our subconscious.

During the January 5 channeling session, Ryuho summoned the guardian spirit of Donald Trump.  One of the interviewers asked: "Are you aware of where you are?"  Trump's G.S. is quoted as having responded:

You just called me, so I came here.  I'm Donald Trump, but I'm not a candidate for the presidency.  I'm the next president, you know?  Please call me, "The Next President, Mr. Trump."  It's the formal standard.  OK?

Yuki Oikawa said: "You were [a] divisive force in U.S. politics last year by a succession of discriminatory remarks against Mexicans, women and Muslims."

Trump's G.S.
You are an enemy [audience laugh].

Oikawa
OK.  However.  However, you faced many criticisms and you got a huge media coverage.  Even so, your rating is still very high and you are a frontrunner.

Trump's G.S.
Frontrunner?  No, next president [audience laugh].

Oikawa
OK.  Did your success so far and people's reaction to your blunt attitude and style surprise you or not?

Trump's G.S.
Hmm . . . What's the problem?  I can't understand.  I'm very popular in the United States.  You, the Japanese, don't know my real popularity.  So, I can't understand your first question.  Criminality?

Oikawa
Discrimination.

Trump's G.S.
Discrimination!?  Oh, no, no, no.  I'm a person of love for the world!  You misunderstood me already.  I just said on behalf of a small portion of people of the United States; people who hate such kind of illegal people living in the United States that insist a lot of rights without paying taxes.  I just represented such an opinion through my mouth, so it's not my real idea.  I just checked it.

Oikawa
Master Ryuho Okawa talked about your technique before this interview.  Are you using any other advertising techniques in your campaign?

Trump's G.S.
Oh, no, no, no.  I, myself, am an advertisement, so I don't need any advertising.  I, myself, am advertising.  I am the Trump Tower itself.  I, myself, am very famous.  So, I don't need any technique.

The following passage concerns "the Russian problem."

Oikawa
OK.  Moving on to the Russian problem.  About the Russian president.  Since the Ukranian crisis two years ago, American politicians like Obama, Hillary and everybody else criticized and said, "Putin is the modern Hitler."  However, you said Putin is the only effective leader in the world.* (*Trump's statement made in a TV show on December 18, 2015.)  Why are you so comfortable praising him?

Trump's G.S.
He has real leadership and he can make decisions.  He is a real power holder, I think.  In some meaning, I respect him.

A spiritually aware individual realizes that if any exercise of power, influence or authority has a negative result upon the lives of other people then the perceived 'power' is a misconception and wielding such 'power' will be detrimental in relation to one's own 'karma.'

The comments of Trump's G.S. about the U.S. economy include: "I will make the U.S. recover from its recession, starting next year . . . Our economy is not so good.  It's near the next great fall . . . I, myself, am an expert in economy and of course a great businessman, so I know everything.  I especially receive some kind of inspiration from Heaven about the economy, so my inspiration is 100 percent correct!  Please rely on me."

Masashi Ishikawa asked, "If possible, could you tell me the key to success?"

Trump's G.S.
Oh, my basic thinking and the Happy Science thinking are almost the same.  I think so.  That's why you, Happy Science people, should support me!

I think big, you think big.  I think carefully, you think carefully.  I think worldwide and you think worldwide.  I believe in God and you believe in God.  So, we are the same.  So, my success is your success.  Your success is my success.

The topic of Muslim immigrants became a topic after Mariko Isis said, "Can I ask what kind of belief you have?"

Trump's G.S.
In business, we have diversity.  I mean that we must have friendship for different types of people or different people in belief, so I don't exclude Muslim people in reality.

But in America, there is a feeling about the terrorist attacks.  Terrorism is the next great matter, so we must minimize that risk.  So, we must be careful of their entering our country in order to protect against a great disaster.

But in reality, I don't hate Muslim people.  If they can change their attitude to become friends and act like Americans, then we can be friends and become business partners.  We can, of course, appoint them as, for example, my cabinet members or hire them in my company.

Reincarnation is a topic of conversation.  When asked about "your past life," Trump's G.S. is quoted as responding ("in a teasing manner") "George Washington!" and soon thereafter explaining: "For example."  Some speculation is shared but finally Trump's G.S. stated: "But correctly, I cannot remember.  It's very difficult for a Christian person to answer you, so please forgive about the minor details."

At one point Trump's G.S. mentioned "I'm the next president.  God decides that."  This is an example of what another famous channeled entity has called a "verbiage contradiction."  Each individual human being exercises 'free will' so in the instance of this quoted statement 'God' momentarily becomes a metaphor for the sum totality of worldly conditions.
